DHR Health Institute for Leadership Development

DHR Health has been leading healthcare in the Rio Grande Valley for more than two decades. It has elevated medical care by creating the largest group of specialty physicians in the Valley; bringing highly-advanced medical technology to the Valley; and, offering more than 75 access points of care across South Texas. This is all initiated and sustained by one of the most experienced healthcare workforce in the industry. It is the people of DHR Health that make the difference and drive innovation in our care, for our community.

In a committed effort to sustain the maximum level of success in our workforce, DHR Health created the DHR Health Institute for Leadership Development under the leadership of Sohail Rao, MD, MA, DPhil., Executive Vice President for Research & Leadership Development, at DHR Health.

The Institute for Leadership Development is designed to cultivate a culture of Servant Leadership, to meet the development and training needs of our employees, and ensure continuity in the philosophy of our leadership. We want our team to have a clear path forward and good leadership will help create that path. The Institute works to design, to create and to fulfill specific goals that are unique to DHR Health – all with the core tenet: For You, For Life.

Leadership development is an integral component of building and sustaining an effective healthcare enterprise. Whether working with top executives or sharpening the leadership skills among leaders, at DHR Health, we believe both efforts create a better work environment for everyone.

At the DHR Health Institute for Leadership Development our MISSION is to cultivate a culture of servant leadership by enhancing Engagement, Accountability, Communication and Transparency.

The Institute trains individuals across the enterprise to take ownership of their role and the tasks required of them. It trains employees to be both more efficient and greater leaders.

The role of the leader may be well-defined or loosely defined, but in the end, the goal is always the same – get the job done by leading in a respectful and professional manner, always. This requires the support and collaboration of employees at all levels of the enterprise. This is why the Institute for Leadership Development plays an integral role in the success of DHR Health.

Purpose of the Institute

The DHR Health Institute for Leadership Development brings several important benefits to the enterprise. Through its teaching sessions, the Institute helps to improve productivity, build better teams, increase employee morale, improve employee retention, promote better decision making, and train future leaders across the enterprise while aligning their management style to the Servant Leadership philosophy.

Servant Leadership is defined as a philosophy built on the belief that the most effective leaders strive to serve others, rather than accrue power or take control.

Servant leaders have people and purpose in their heart. They display kindness, empathy and concern for others.
The Institute for Leadership Development is open to current and future leaders, and staff at all levels of the enterprise. Its cross functional design prepares our workforce to collaborate with colleagues, build a stronger, more innovative healthcare delivery system, as we make our way through unprecedented transformation in healthcare.
